I'm not much of a poetry fan but this is one I learned when I was in college and it has been an inspiration to me for decades.  Actually it was one of a group of poems my dad had collected for making speeches.  My dad had been a member of the Dale Carnegie Course which teaches the members to be more comfortable in speaking to both small and large groups of people.  Even after he had completed the course he went on to join the DCGs or Dale Carnegie Graduates.  They taught their members to always be on the lookout for interesting little quips, stories and poems which could be incorporated into future speeches, and my dad had quite a nice collection.  When he died when I was a senior in high school, my mom kept his collection.  Often during my college career she would send me one of these clippings as a bit of encouragement or perhaps as a message which had meant something to my dad and she thought it was something he would have shared with me if he had lived.  I've seen it one other place on the Internet with just a little bit different wording but this is the way I learned it and the way it has worked for me.  -- JP

When Things Go Wrong

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
and opposition keeps pushing you on up the hill --
When friends are low and debts are high
When you want to smile but you have to sigh.
If care is pressing you down a bit....
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Success is opposition turned inside out
the silver lining to the clouds of doubt.
You can never tell how close you are......you may be
near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things go wrong that you mustn't quit.
