* The "intermod problem
"Solved the problem with a Parr Electronics VHFM 152-158 filter intermod
filter." Greg.....N6PUO

“So I read the manual over and over and finally discovered on page 59 & 64
there is a way to narrow down the passband and to change the local
oscillator freq. These two changes made a world of difference with intermods.
It does not completely eliminate them, but does make the rig much more
useable. A typical spurious emissions rejection figure is 60 db and I have
found no dual banders with a better figure than that. This, in my opinion is
poor, but it is the way it is.”

Gain and tone problems with the microphone.
"Mic Issue -- This is the reason I gave it a "4". I got the "tinny audio"
reports, then I put the HM-118 from my 706 on it and it was 100% better
(according to at least two people). I took the mic apart, and found that the
keypad was almost completely covering the mic hole. I trimmed a little of
the keypad away and the issue was solved!! I suggest anyone still using the
stock HM-133 check for this." Joe, N3JI

* The fragile finals
No solutions noted yet, but make sure to have a 50 ohm load on the output
when you key the mic!

Problems with mounting the Control head:
Solution to “mounting bracket for the control head; not many options on
mounting, but Velcro came to the rescue.” (Extra strong from RS). WA9AFM
“I recently purchased a bracket from http://www.panavise.com They make them
for most vehicles. No cutting or drilling. Mounting my control head, XM
Radio control head and cell phone on this bracket and additional "Z"
bracket. OUTSTANDING product. Tilts the 2720 control head just right.

Separation Cable too short:
First the separation cable supplied was not long enough to reach from the
trunk to the front dash of the Saturn. This was an easy fix, a standard 6
wire phone extension cable and coupler gave me more than enough to reach
anywhere in the car.

Manual did not explain Cross-Band Setup:
Note that you have to follow the regular band placement on the radio
with VHF on the left side and UHF on the right.
Cross band repeat mode, to invoke this function:
Set the frequencies on both bands
Press LOW and DUP, then press SET for two seconds
Two flashing Ls will appear on the display
To exit this function:
Press LOW and DUP, then press SET for two seconds
Many have been wondering about the Cross-Band setup and use. It's real
simple. Icom used the KISS factor in setting up this mode. Set up the
frequencies on each band, push and hold the dup/moni & low/prio buttons at
the same time. While holding those two, push and hold the set button quickly
thereafter and it will then beep and show a pair of "L's" and they will
start flashing. Remember, push and hold the dup/low buttons, and while
holding them, push and hold the set button. The unit will respond with two
flashing L's and a beep. Simple as K-I-S-S. To deactivate the Cross-Band
mode, just press and hold the set button and wait for the beep. The L's will
go away and you will now be in normal mode. Steve NS3L
“To Turn On or Off The Cross Band Repeate Function. Hold The DUP LO and SET
Keys for 2 seconds. Note you have to have your VHF and UHF frequencies set
First.”

“set up your radio with 2 meter on the Left side and 440 on the Right side.
You must be in the VFO mode, not memory mode. Set up your frequencies and if
you are going to access a repeater, set up your duplex direction, set up the
right sub-audible tone and turn on the tone encoder first. Then, press and
hold the LOW and DUP buttons, and while holding these down, press the SET
button for about 2 seconds. If all goes according to plan, you will see two
flashing “L”s on the display indicating that the radio is in cross-band
operation. To exit, press just the SET button for 2 seconds.” Icom support
To exit the crossband repeat you only have to hold down the "set" button for
at least 2 seconds.

The idea behind Cross-Band feature…
“When you set up crossband repeat, you MUST put the VHF frequency on the
left side of the radio, and the UHF frequency on the right side or it will
not work. If the radio receives a signal on VHF it will transmit on UHF, and
when a signal comes in on UHF it will transmit on VHF. If the radio is
receiving on VHF and transmitting on UHF, you can not transmit on UHF and
have it go out on VHF at the same time. That is, the radio is not full
duplex. If you have the VHF side set to a repeater and the UHF on simplex,
when you unkey on UHF, the radio automatically switches and transmits on UHF
the repeater. As long as the repeater is transmitting and your 2720 is
repeating on UHF, you can not make it switch. All signals must drop to allow
the radio to stop transmitting one direction and to start in the other.
Crossbanding to repeaters with long squelch tails can be trying to say the
least when the other users of the repeater will not allow it to drop.
Because as long as it stays up, you won't get a word in edgewise or
otherwise.
Now if I read between the lines of your note, you may be trying to go VHF to
VHF. This will not work. You must have VHF on left and UHF on right. It will
not crossband within the same band.
Hope this helps. Doug”
“To the best of my knowledge you can not program a shortcut to enable
crossband repeat. You have to practice your manual dexterity each time. To
exit the crossband repeat you only have to hold down the "set" button for at
least 2 seconds.” Doug
An example: “ I want the 2720 to output to the imput of a
2 meter repeater, therefore that means that my ht and one band on the
2720 have to be setup for 440 simplex. Let say that the repeater is
147.195+ and I want to be able to transmit on it's imput, 147.795.
How would I set this up on the radio and HT?”

* What
can be done for low audio output?
“ To increase the audio: With the radio off press and hold the "set" button
and then power on the radio. You will start in a menu. Find the audio gain
and change it to high. It has two options. Low & High. “ 73's kc9coy
